The National Theatre is one of Norway’s leading stages for theater arts, with a long tradition and a dedicated audience. During the pandemic, the National Theatre had to find new ways to keep delivering performances to its audience.

Challenge:
The National Theatre needed to create a digital platform where people could stream theater productions.

Process:
We aimed to develop a digital service that fit within the National Theatre’s existing brand. The platform had to be easy to use and reflect the theater’s identity while also feeling new and exciting.

As the UX designer, I started by designing the user journey for the new solution. Starting with promotion and advertising, through the purchase process, and into the streaming platform. I drew inspiration from popular services like Netflix and NRK to make sure the platform was familiar and easy to navigate for the audience.

With input from the National Theatre, we learned that some of their audience members were not very familiar with digital platforms. So, we gathered a group of older users and tested the service with them via video chat. This gave us important insights into how we could create a simple user experience and use clear, non-technical language.

We worked closely as a team, with developers, designers, and a project manager from the National Theatre. Speed was important to launch the new service as quickly as possible.

Result:
When National Digital launched, it featured four performances for streaming. The service helped the National Theatre keep running during the pandemic and provided a good option for theater lovers. The service has now been discontinued after fulfilling its purpose, as the live theater experience remains the best, even in a digital age.
